The team behind this body contouring comparison

The Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital is led by four consultants working inside a tertiary general hospital. Tongchun Mao, MD, is responsible for the medical review of this site and performs both operations. A comparison of this kind genuinely involves the other three — complex and revision cases, the skin assessment that decides whether skin will contract over a new contour, and aftercare.

Tongchun Mao

Tongchun Mao (毛彤春)

Deputy Director & Head of Aesthetic Surgery · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending · Lead Physician of This Site

Aesthetic surgery · body contouring · the surgical decision

Dr. Tongchun Mao is Deputy Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center and head of its aesthetic surgery service at Chongqing West District Hospital, and he is the physician responsible for this site. A core specialist formerly at the Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery Department of Xinqiao Hospital, affiliated with Army Medical University, he has rooted his clinical practice for more than 20 years and personally performs over 700 operations a year.

Fat and skin are removed by different operations, and the patients who end up disappointed are usually the ones who were sold the wrong one of the two. Dr. Mao’s position, and the one this site is written around, is that the choice should follow from an examination of what the abdomen is actually made of — fat cells, skin, or muscle that has separated at the midline — rather than from which operation is easier to schedule or to describe.

Clinical focus

  • Body contouring: abdominoplasty, fat removal, and the decision between them
  • Repair of separated abdominal muscle and the abdominal wall
  • Staged body contouring after major weight loss
  • Contour refinement and fat grafting alongside body surgery

Academic roles & achievements

  • Member, Rhinoplasty and Trunk Tumor Groups, Chinese Medical Association Plastic Surgery Branch
  • Member, Chongqing Medical Aesthetics Quality Control Center; Member, Chongqing Medical Accident / Disability Assessment Expert Pools
  • Deputy Chair, Chongqing Shapingba District Medical Aesthetics Committee
  • Published 5 SCI papers, holds 7 national patents, and has participated in 4 research projects
  • Repeatedly named an “Outstanding Young Physician” at Xinqiao Hospital since joining in 2005

Neither operation is the default

A soft layer of fat under skin that still springs back is a problem fat removal treats. Hanging skin over muscle that no longer meets in the middle is a problem an abdominoplasty treats. Both are common, both are legitimate, and an abdomen that has both is a conversation about staging rather than about which operation is the stronger one.

Shaoliang Wang

Shaoliang Wang (王韶亮)

Director, Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center · Vice Chief Physician, Associate Professor, Doctor of Medicine

Plastic surgery · complex cases · revision

Dr. Shaoliang Wang is Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital, and previously served as Deputy Chief of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery at Xinqiao Hospital, affiliated with Army Medical University. On this site he is the second opinion that a previously operated abdomen, or a contouring case with something else in it, is brought to.

His part of the decision is the one patients rarely ask for: whether an abdominal wall that has already been operated on should be operated on again, what a hernia or a healing problem changes about the plan, and which combination of procedures the tissue can safely tolerate in one session.

Clinical focus

  • Revision and reconstruction after failed cosmetic body surgery
  • Complex abdominal wall and wound problems
  • Scar revision and comprehensive scar management
Ke He

Ke He (何锞)

Deputy Director & Head of Skin & Laser Aesthetics · Attending Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending

Skin & laser aesthetics · surgical aftercare

Dr. Ke He is Deputy Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center and head of its skin and laser aesthetic service at Chongqing West District Hospital, with more than 20 years on the clinical front line. Her part of this comparison is the assessment that asks whether the skin over an abdomen will contract back over a new contour, or whether it has lost the elasticity that would let it.

Clinical focus

  • Skin quality and elasticity assessment before body contouring
  • Non-surgical body treatments and their honest limits
  • Early scar prevention and repair after body surgery
Yongbo Jia

Yongbo Jia (贾勇波)

Deputy Director & Head of Dermatology · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending

Dermatology · assessment and complication management

Dr. Yongbo Jia is Deputy Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center and head of dermatology at Chongqing West District Hospital, trained at the Institute of Dermatology, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. His part of the assessment is the dermatological one: whether the skin and the healing it will do can carry the plan, and what has to be treated first if they cannot.

Clinical focus

  • Dermatological assessment before body contouring surgery
  • Management of skin disease that affects surgical healing
  • Postoperative skin complications and barrier repair

Not sure which problem your abdomen has?

An assessment begins with what the tissue is made of rather than with an operation. We will say plainly what fat removal would change, what an abdominoplasty would change, what neither would, and whether combining the two or waiting is the sequence that suits your case.
